Beery Method is taking you for a intergalactic nostalgic journey with the latest work titled 2001: A Space Odyssey | 2013: A Cosmic Epoch for the Oscar Legends! exhibition in San Francisco. The show opening takes place at SOMArts San Francisco with an amazing line up of professional artists who work in a variety of industries and media. On one side of the gallery Oscar Legends will feature art art inspired by some of history’s most groundbreaking Oscar-winning films. Annie Hall will be there, as well as Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Once they’ve heard about it, the usual suspects will probably come from as far as Chinatown and Casablanca to see this exhibit in all it’s glory. Put down your Pulp Fiction and come witness all this American Beauty for yourself! Longtime film and art-lover, Rotten Atom, is co-curating the show.

2013: A Cosmic Epoch is inspired by the epic film 2001: A Space Odyssey and titled to better fit the retro-contemporary time now bursting with a renewal of space exploration and astro-science appreciation amongst civilization. I tackled the work with my usual stencil/aerosol painting method which exudes and exemplifies the utter spaciness of the piece. Splatters of paint create star bursting galaxies and vibrant nebulae rich throughout the face of the piece. Rocking the uber classic film’s burnt orange space helmet is Dr. David Bowman. Splitting the duality of hero and a darkly death side to the film I split the cosmonauts face peeling back to reveal a skull. Not wanting to cliche the piece by incorporating HAL 9000, a monolith, or a bone turning into a space station I decided to run further with the duality and split the piece in half. One half the main character of the film with smattering of symbology and the other half a display for a vintage vinyl record of the original 2001: A Space Odyssey film soundtrack.

The vinyl record can be removed to be viewed and played by simply sliding in and out of the custom place holders on the front of the piece. While removed the piece reveals 2001: A Space Odyssey in original font type face floating in the cosmos. Atop the piece is the same font face with a more contemporary feel. The record can also be stored in the back of the work if desired. Really what could be a better investment and enjoyment for any collector or film buff than original artwork that can be viewed while listening to the floating vibrations of the original soundtrack from a nostalgic media on a turntable?
